GABINO PAMPINI AÑO 1998 . VUELVE LA SALSA CON GABINO PAMPINI (D-10677)

This a stop-gap recommendation until Gabino Pampini’s album with Colombian bandleader/pianist Hernán Gutiérrez, 'Con Sacrificio' (1984) on Martínez Records, and his wonderful trio of albums with the band Fuerza Noble on Mercy Records (1987 to 1988) have been reissued. In my view, 'Con Sacrificio,' a model of restrained yet swinging salsa, was one of the most outstanding albums of the 1980s. Gutiérrez died shortly after making it, but the Panamanian-born sonero continued his sound as co-leader of Fuerza Noble. All these albums were made in Miami. But it was in Colombia that Pampini developed a large following. To sample his inimitable, funky, gravelly voice in the meantime, Colombia’s Fuentes label has recently issued 'Vuelva La Salsa.' The CD compiles his recent work with La Sabrosura ('Tango, Salsa y Arrabal,' 1997) and The Latin Brothers (1997). It also includes earlier hits with Fuerza Noble and Grupo Galé, but until I’ve heard the CD, I’m unable to confirm whether these are the originals or remakes." (John Child 99/00 Catalog)
