A veteran Los Angeles session player and bandleader active in
the 40s, 50s, and 60s, Bloch enjoyed a uniquely varied career:
He played on records by Frank Sinatra and Eartha Kitt, was a
regular on Los Angeles’ esteemed Central Avenue rhythm & blues
scene, dropped one of the most infamous burlesque sax runs on
The Johnny Otis Band’s “Harlem Nocturne,” was a staple of
mambo king Perez Prado’s big band and a member of The Afro
Blues Quintent (the band that eventually become funk icons
War), and then in the 60s went on to lead his own Latin big
band, which included Afro-Cuban superstars like Mongo
Santamaria and Willie Bobo, over the course of seven LPs for
labels big and small (from Capitol to Andex). In the 80s,
Bloch converted to Messianic Judaism, played sax for the
Messianic band Israel’s Hope, and is now the Senior Rabbi of
Temple Beth Shalom in Rancho Cucamonga, California.
