Former conguero for Angel Canales, NYC based percussionist Joe Collado has produced a highly enjoyable cd on which he plays congas, bongos, timbales, piano and keyboards. It's a mix of Latin jazz and old school salsa jams. Collado is joined by horn player Jose Raul "Lips" Morales Jr. Collado was voted "Best Percussionist" 2009 by Miami New Times Magazine, and listening to "Old School Jam" it's easy to hear why. Collado has successfully parlayed his years of experience into creating Solo Joe. The result is distilled, essential, rich dance grooves without pretense. Highly Recommended.
[Note: the self-produced cd is packaged in a slim, promo-style, jewel case without rear liners. Cover and font liners are included.] (BP, 2010-01-06)

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and of Puerto Rican decent, Award Winning Percussionist Joe Collado has been playing Latin percussion since his teen years. Known mostly for his tasteful and rhythmical playing, Joe credits his percussion schooling from the countless rumba jams in the streets of New York City and witnessing all the greats bands during the Fania All-star era. Relocating to Miami, FL after graduating from John Jay HS in Brooklyn to play Intercollegiate basketball at Miami Dade CC, Joe then returned to NYC to play and study at Queens College. He majored in music his first two years in college and polished his percussive skills under master teachers such as Johnny (JC) Conga and Hector (Pocho) Nesciosup while in Miami. Creating his own playing style he eventually took his skills to another level after graduating with a BA in Health/PE with a minor in music at FIU. Joe has shared his skills on stage with the greatest of percussion such as Santana's Jose "Chepito" Areas and Master percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo, just to name a few. His band repertoire includes Salsa stars such as Eddie Palmieri's Herman Olivera, Henry Fiol and with the world famed Salsa underground Legend, Angel Canales Orchestra as well as other stars. Joe has also been awarded Best Percussionist in Miami (2009), by the Miami New Times. Presently, Joe is playing steady with local South Florida bands such as the Galo Rivera/Santana Tribute band and well as his own group, Latino Groove Project. Joe has also honed his total musical skills with his debut CD called "Solo Joe". Yet with his successful musical career and for many years, he still manages somehow to serve as a full time Miami-Dade County Public School High School teacher.
Joe Collado is a true master of the Latin Rhythm. In his first solo effort, entitled "Solo Joe", his expertise shows through on many levels, from his rich latin percussion mix to his energetic piano stylings. Joe's composition style ranges from Afro-Cuban (Puerto Rican style) salsa, to New York themed Latin Jazz, to smooth listening Jazz, to Rock, Funk and Soul, and even Latin Disco (Old School Jam-Club Remix). At times the music is evocative of the smooth influence of Lonnie Liston Smith (Love 94), at other times, the fiery latin jazz of Eddie Palmieri shines through (Old School Jam). Then sometimes you'll swear your listening to Santana without the guitar (Guajireggae). Joe's wife Jackie chimes in on Rican Rumba, giving the sound some real street cred. In all, Joe's personal style of rhythmic latin jazz is overwhelming with Joe's own approach to music and life. Recorded and engineered by Joe himself and mixed and mastered by South Florida's studio genius Galo Rivera. FIVE STARS ***** Joe Collado is the Miami New Times Percussionist of the Year for 2009 and is the founder of Miami's Roots of Rhythm ensemble
